SLaM Anti Racism Workshops

As phase two to my commission from the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust, and my project Incipiency, I commissioned and co-facilitated a series of creative sessions focusing on anti-racism for staff at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). SLaM provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK, serving a local population of 1.3 million people in south London, as well as specialist services for children and adults across the UK and beyond.
The 4 commissioned artists each brought a diverse range of lived experiences in relation to mental health, including:
Leon Bailey: What is it like to be a Black man on an in patient ward, including toxic perceptions of Black men as aggressors, connections to the criminal justice system and the need for community support and destigmatisation in the Black community.
Dole Posh: Postnatal depression in Black women - pushing back against the Strong Black Woman narratives.
Aida Silvestri: Exploring mental health experiences exclusively for staff of colour, including conversations around colourism, belonging, professional identity and perceptions.
Estabrak: Creative and playful approaches to themes of home and belonging, subconscious bias and judgements.
Each artist was offered clinical support through an access/wellbeing budget supported through my Arts Council funding.
